Fly For Fun is certified by the Civil Aviation Authority for ICAO Language Proficiency. Its aim is to verify the ability to communicate in English.

Pilots of airplanes, airships, helicopters and aircraft powered by lift, air traffic controllers and air station operators shall demonstrate the ability to express and understand in the language used for radiotelephone communication at the level specified in the language proficiency requirements of Appendix 1.

This requirement does not apply to Czech or Slovak-speaking pilots flying in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

There is no compulsory course for ICAO Language Proficiency. Exam preparation can be completely individual. The aim of the exam is to verify the ability to communicate in English. In case of interest we offer ourRefresh Aviation English course.

Test result

The result of a successfully passed test is the following levels, with the specified period of validity until the next check:

  • Level 4 - Examination after four years
  • Level 5 - Examination after six years
  • Level 6 (native speaker) - without further examination

Course of the exam

The exam is in English and its course is as follows:

In the first phase, the examiners test the ability of the pilot to speak in English, respond to questions and use common language. It is basically an interview in which the tested person has to demonstrate his ability to communicate.

In the second phase, the task of the student is to listen to a situation on board and communication with ATC, where the task is to describe what happened in the case and how the participants responded. The student must also demonstrate the ability to capture and interpret an ATIS message (eg, from Ruzyně or Brno). Another task is to describe the parts of the aircraft (common parts such as an elevator, rudder, stabilizer, etc.) and read and then translate technical text.

The third phase is the final debriefing of the examination, the evaluation and the test result.

The exam takes about 25-30 minutes.

An audiovisual recording is mandatory from the examination. This record is merely for archiving and eventual follow-up check.
